Mammootty and Mohanlal to Reunite for a Major Malayalam Film Shot in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is set to host the filming of a highly anticipated Malayalam film, starring two of the industry’s biggest icons, Mammootty and Mohanlal. This marks the duo’s first on-screen collaboration in 20 years, creating significant excitement in the film world.
The announcement followed a meeting between the film’s producers and Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena on September 15 at Temple Trees, the PM’s official residence in Colombo. The delegation included Anto Joseph, President of the Malayalam Film Producers Association (MFPA), alongside directors Mahesh Narayanan and C.V. Sarathy, who outlined their plans for the film.
Director Mahesh Narayanan confirmed the project to ETV Bharat but withheld additional details. The film will be shot over 30 days in Sri Lanka, with further locations including Kerala, Delhi, and London.
Prime Minister Gunawardena expressed gratitude for selecting Sri Lanka as a filming destination, noting the potential boost to tourism and foreign exchange earnings. Other key figures, including MP Yadamini Gunawardena and Advisor Sugeeswara Senadhira, also attended the meeting.
This project adds to Sri Lanka’s rich history as a filming location, joining past international successes like The Elephant Walk, Tarzan the Apeman, and Bridge on the River Kwai. The film is expected to enhance the country’s reputation as a sought-after destination for filmmakers worldwide.
Both Mammootty and Mohanlal are legends of Malayalam cinema, having appeared together in over 50 films. Mammootty was most recently seen in Turbo, directed by Vysakh, while Mohanlal is preparing for his directorial debut with Barroz, in which he also stars.
This long-awaited reunion promises to deliver yet another memorable performance from two of cinema’s greatest talents.
