K-pop Group NewJeans Accuses Agency of Mistreatment, Seeks Contract Termination
Chart-topping K-pop group NewJeans has accused its agency, Ador, of “mistreatment” and “manipulation,” announcing plans to leave the company during a late-night press conference on Thursday.
Ador, a subsidiary of Hybe, has refuted the claims, stating that its contract with the group remains valid and that it has not violated any terms.
This dispute stems from a long-standing conflict between former NewJeans producer Min Hee-Jin and Hybe chairman Bang Si-hyuk, which has drawn significant media attention in South Korea.
At the press conference, member Hanni alleged workplace harassment, stating, “This is not the type of work ethic we respect… continuing under such conditions would only harm us.” She also accused the agency of deliberate miscommunication and mistreatment of both the group and its staff.
Ador, however, maintained that the contract could not be terminated unilaterally without valid grounds. In a statement, the agency expressed regret over the press conference, emphasizing its willingness to engage in open discussions with the group.
NewJeans has demanded an apology for alleged workplace bullying, the reinstatement of Min, and resolution of contract breaches. While committed to fulfilling current obligations, the group warned fans that they might lose the right to use the “NewJeans” name after the contract ends.
This legal battle could lead to court intervention, with reports estimating that the group might owe up to 300 billion South Korean Won (£170m) to terminate the contract early—an assertion member Haerin has strongly denied.
The controversy has dented Hybe’s reputation and affected its stock price, which dropped 3% on Friday.
Debuting in 2022, NewJeans quickly rose to prominence with hits like Super Shy and OMG. Despite their success, the group remains embroiled in this escalating dispute, casting uncertainty over their future.
