Indian Cultural Association in Sri Lanka Celebrates Durga Puja with Grandeur

Members of the Indian Cultural Association (ICA) in Sri Lanka recently gathered to celebrate Durga Puja at the Sri Manika Vinayagar Kovil, Lorenz Road, Colombo-05. This annual festival, recognized by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2022, originates from the Indian subcontinent and symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, honoring the Hindu goddess Durga. The October celebrations commemorated Durga’s victory over the shape-shifting demon Mahishasura from Hindu mythology.

The ICA’s event featured a beautifully adorned stage and pandals housing an idol of goddess Durga, where devotees offered prayers and engaged in traditional rituals. Durga Puja, an important festival within the Shaktism tradition of Hinduism, celebrates Durga as a powerful maternal figure representing the force behind all creation and life.

Widely celebrated across all Indian states, Durga Puja holds particular significance for the Indian diaspora in Sri Lanka. This year’s festivities included scripture recitations, cultural performances, and gift-giving, creating a joyous and reverent atmosphere for attendees.

Following Durga Puja, the ICA also observed Lakshmi Puja, honoring the goddess of wealth and prosperity. These festivals continue to enrich the cultural calendar of the Indian community in Sri Lanka, promoting the preservation of the Indian subcontinent’s rich heritage and traditions.
