Apple Warns Users in India and 91 Other Countries of Possible “Mercenary Spyware Attack”
Apple Inc. has issued a cautionary notice to its users in India and ninety-one other countries, alerting them to a potential “mercenary spyware attack”. The warning was conveyed through a threat notification email sent to targeted users.
According to the notification email reviewed by Reuters, the company disclosed that assailants attempted to “remotely compromise the iPhone”.
The notification email stressed that mercenary spyware attacks are infrequent and considerably more sophisticated compared to typical cybercriminal activity or malware.
Apple has been issuing such threat notifications multiple times a year since 2021, as indicated in the email. It further stated that users in over 150 countries have been notified to date.
In October 2023, certain Indian lawmakers shared screenshots on social media featuring a notification from the iPhone manufacturer. The notification stated, “Apple believes you are being targeted by state-sponsored attackers who are trying to remotely compromise the iPhone associated with your Apple ID.”
However, the company clarified at that time that it did not attribute the threat notifications to “any specific state-sponsored attacker”.
