Explores the Rich History and Romance of Cinnamon

Inaugurating the world’s first Cinnamon Museum at the picturesque Mirissa Hills Estate in Henwalle, Mirissa, marks a significant milestone in unraveling the captivating saga of cinnamon. The Museum’s grand opening on April 6th, 2024, was graced by the esteemed presence of Hon. Harin Fernando, Minister for Tourism, and Miles Young, Chairman of Mirissa Hills.

From its ancient origins intertwined with Egyptian embalming rituals to its contemporary significance in gastronomy and medicine, the museum beckons visitors on an enthralling journey through the annals of cinnamon’s history, production techniques, and symbolic connotations.

Nestled amidst the breathtaking landscape of the Mirissa Hills Estate, masterfully crafted by the renowned architect C. Anjelandran, the museum serves as a comprehensive visitor center. Here, patrons can partake in guided tours and hands-on demonstrations elucidating the art of cinnamon peeling. Additionally, they have the opportunity to indulge in local delicacies, immersing themselves in the lush ambiance of the surroundings.

In his address, Miles Young underscored the museum’s dual purpose: not only does it illuminate the disparities between authentic cinnamon and its inferior counterparts but it also exalts the spice’s intrinsic romance and mythical allure. He remarked, “Cinnamon is an underexploited asset for tourism in Sri Lanka. Many visitors crave to know what it looks like but have nowhere to go. We will reveal the difference between true cinnamon and poor-quality substitutes. But we also reveal the world of romance and legend which makes this spice unique. The museum is a celebration of cinnamon but also a tribute to all those who work in the trade and sustain the agricultural economy of Sri Lanka.”
